Self Portrait

2024

Artist Statement

This self-portrait began as a simple exercise: an attempt to observe myself honestly and translate what I saw in the mirror onto the canvas. What emerged, however, was more than just a likeness—it was the first time I felt I had successfully captured not only the features but the emotional presence of my reflection. It became a moment of quiet recognition, where representation met self-understanding.

The piece has since taken on the playful nickname Millennial with a Pearl Earring. This is a contemporary nod to Vermeer’s iconic painting. While the reference is lighthearted, it also speaks to a dialogue between past and present, classical beauty and modern identity. The title hints at generational nuance, cultural context, and the evolving ways we see ourselves and wish to be seen.

This portrait is a study in form and an intimate exploration of self. It invites viewers to consider how we engage with our image and what it means to truly “see” ourselves.

Right: Before beginning the final piece, I created a preliminary charcoal drawing to closely examine and understand the structure of my facial features. This initial study allowed me to explore proportions, shading, and expression, while also experimenting with how to arrange these elements into a balanced and intentional composition. It became a crucial step in developing a visual language that felt authentic and expressive.
